Reports were current here today that A. J. Altmeyer, former secretary of the Wisconsin State Industrial Commission, is soon to be appointed under-secretary of labor in the Roosevelt under-cabinet, thus bringing further into the limelight a man who recently has advanced to a position of major importance among New Deal administrators.
Altmeyer was taken from his Industrial Commission job here to fill a minor place in NRA officialdom. Then he was made deputy commissioner of the United States Employes’ Compensation Commission in the administration of the Longshoremen’s Compensation Act.
His next step upward was an appointment as head of the labor branch of the compliance division of the Federl Recovery Administration. Authentic capital sources insist that his appointment as labor under-secretary will follow next.
As under-secretary of labor, Altmeyer would be acting secretary and a full-fledged member of President Rossevelt’s cabinet when Secretary Perkins goes to Europe this summer. Altmeyer has long been recognized among economists and labor sociologists as an authority on labor statistics, especially as related to workmen’s compensation.
