The successor to the title of Lord Roseberry, who died Monday, his son, Lord Dalmey, is a half-Jew, his mother having been the former Hannah Rothschild, only daughter of Baron Meyer Rothschild.
Considerable discussion was provoked at the time by this mixed marriage, it being the fourth instance of a Rothschild marrying out of the faith. The former Hannah Rothschild, however, did not renounce her faith with her marriage. Throughout her life she maintained an active interest in Jewish welfare work in East London. She was buried in a Jewish cemetery.
The younger son of the former Hannah Rothschild and the Earl of Roseberry, Neil Primrose, was said to have taken a great fancy to his mother’s religion, prior to his death in 1917 during active war service in Palestine with the son of Edmond Rothschild. Prior to his death he displayed an interest in the Zionist movement and expressed the intention of devoting himself to the Zionist cause upon his return to England.
