A gift of $250,000 toward the Endowment Fund of the American University of Beirut, Syria, on condition that the total endowment of $4,500,000 be raised by July 1, 1929, was announced received from Julius Rosenwald.
A condition of Mr. Rosenwald’s gift is that the endowment shall be temporary rather than perpetual.
Edwin R. Embree, president of the Julius Rosenwald Fund, in a letter to Albert W. Staub, director of the Near East College Association, said that the pledge was made on the basis of the statement that the trustees of Beirut will create a temporary fund, into which at least $3,000,000 of university funds will be placed.
