The model housing development for Chicago will not be undertaken at this time by Julius Rosenwad, according to a statement issued by the philanthropist following a report that be was about to proceed with a $4,000,000 building project.
“I have been for some time interested in providing better housing conditions ferworking people and have consulted groups interested in similar projects in New York City, such as the Amalgamated Clothing Union, Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and Mr. Rockefeiler.
Unfortunately conditions in Chicago do not encourage this type of building. There is no such general law as that recently passed in New York for the aid of building projects. Furthermore, ordinances in Chicago have placed arbitrary restrictions on this type of building. These conditions make it almost impossible to erect suitable apartments which working men can afford to rent or buy, and which will provide a moderate but reasonable return on the investment. If such restrictions are removed, I should be greatly encouraged to take up again building projects which I had considered.”
