A joint investigation was undertaken by the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of the Interior into the charges of brutality suffered by the Jewish population of Britchani at the hands of the local government authorities.
The Ministries sent a joint investigation committee to Britchani, in the district Chotyn, to inquire into the treatment accorded Jewish youths, members of the Yiddish Cultural League, by the chief of police, the chief of the gendarmerie and secret service agents, who heaped indignities on the league’s membership on the pretext they were searching for Communist literature.
The attention of the government was drawn to the events in Britchani by Deputy Dan, Social Democrat, who declared that government officials were torturing and beating Jewish citizens, their activities being especially directed against members of the Yiddish Cultural League. Deputy Dan urged the government to immediately suspend government officials guilty of barbarous acts and to bring them to trial.
