Rigid security measures were being enforced today at the Rumanian Legation here following a complaint by Rumania of an alleged attack by unidentified assailants upon two members of the legation staff. Officials of the legation said that the Rumanian Government took a “very serious view” of the matter.
First word of the attack came from Bucharest where the Rumanian Foreign Ministry complained to the Israeli envoy that a legation driver had been attacked in Tel Aviv. At the time of the attack the legation had made no complaint either to the police or to the Israeli Government. A legation source said that the two staff members were attacked as they sat in a parked car on a Tel Aviv street.
The Rumanian Minister Petru Manu left today for Jerusalem where he lodged a formal complaint with the Foreign Ministry. The Ministry later stated that only one unidentified man was involved in the alleged attack. Israeli officials said they learned from Mr. Manu that, on October 13, a legation employee, driving an automobile on a Tel Aviv street, was accosted by an unidentified person who allegedly tried to hit the Rumanian with a stick. The Rumanian swerved his car, according to this report, and the attacker’s stick struck a rear fender of the automobile.
