A grant of 600,000,000 lei (approximately $6,000,000) has been made to Jewish community schools for the current year by the Rumanian Government, it was disclosed today. Of this sum, 15,000,000 lei have already been paid out.
The Ministry of Education has granted full autonomy to the Jewish schools in the question of arranging ourricula and setting holidays. Nationalist groups within the Jewish community are demanding that the schools observe the Sabbath and introduce the study of Hebrew. A Hebrew school is functioning in Bucharest.
In an interview today with a delegation of the Jewish Democratic Committee, Minister of Justice Lucretiu Patrascanu said that “the government will continue removing the remnants of racial legislation and hopes that the last traces will soon have disappeared.”
(In a letter to the American Jewish Conference, released today, Acting Secretary of State Joseph C. Grew said that reports of the arrest in Bucharest of Dr. William Filderman, president of the Union of Rumanian Jewish Communities, are incorrect. Mr. Grew’s statement – the second he has issued on the subject- was based on information received from the United States mission in Bucharest. He suggested that the reports might have arisen from “earlier erroneous news items” which were subsequently proven false.)
