Premier Goga told the Daily Herald in an interview today that “a half million vagabond” Jews who allegedly entered as refugees from Russia, Hungary and Germany after the War, could not be regarded as Rumanian citizens. Interviewed shortly after he received reminders from Great Britain and France regarding Rumania’s treaty obligations, Premier Goga was quoted as saying:
“Rumania is tolerant to minorities, but after the War Jewish refugees from Russia, Hungary and Germany invaded Rumania and we have, therefore, a half million vagabond people whom we cannot regard as Rumanian citizens. My first measure will be to declare that we cannot take responsibility for retraining these people to our State life.”
To questions on whether anti-Jewish measures will cause unemployment of non-Jews, the new Premier replied that there would only be a “surface disturbance.”
