Moving anew in Rumania’s anti-Semitic drive, the Ministry of Education has ruled that all synagogues and temples can be used for services only under special permission from the ministry, the German wireless reported today.
Such permission only will be granted if there are at least 400 Jewish faithful in a city and 200 in each specified rural district, the report. All synagogues which are refused such permission will become State property. (The Associated Press said the decree also applied to Jewish hospitals.)
The action was taken under a decree depriving all sects and religious societies of all official privileges, it was said. Jewish religious societies are merely recognized as existing without any special privileges.
The Rumanian Education Minister has ordered removal of all Jews who are members of staffs of Rumanian theaters, the German wireless reported.
The domestic policy of the Iron Guard calls for “absolute destruction of the power of the Jews and Freemasons but freedom for all national groups living within the Rumanian borders,” Prof. Horia Sima leader of the Guard, told German and Italian newspapermen today in an interview in Bucharest, according to the German wireless.
