The Rumanian Government today announced that Jews will no longer be considered a national minority, but will be classified as Rumanians of Jewish religion.
The announcement was issued by the Ministry for Nationalities. No interpretation of the new policy was given. Hitherto, Jews in Rumania were regarded as a national minority, although the national minority rights secured for them under international agreements were violated or even annulled on many occasions.
The Rumanian section of the World Jewish Congress opened a conference here today with sixty delegates from various Jewish organizations in Rumania participating. The conference was addressed by Chief Rabbi Szafran, Dr. William Filderman, Dr. A. Zissu, Dr. Wilhelm Fischer and other Rumanian Jewish leaders.
