Following changes in the Rumanian language examination requirement for lawyers who are members of national minorities, Curierul Israelit, organ of the Union of Rumanian Jews, charged today the examination would now be directed exclusively against Jews.
The Standing Commission of the Rumanian Lawyers’ Union has altered its ruling to make the examinations necessary only for lawyers who are formally denounced by one or several attorneys, or by an official of a local bar association for not mastering the language. The action was taken after a protest by lawyers of the German and Hungarian minorities, who declared they would not undergo the language test on the ground that it was unconstitutional.
Meanwhile, the Bucharest bar authorities, disregarding a Ministry of Justice order not to suspend Jewish lawyers pending the revision of citizenships, has eliminated seven more Jewish members, among them Jacob Bacalu, president of the Rumanian Jewish Youth Association.
