An “execution squad” of eight shocktroopers of the anti-Semitic Iron Guard tonight assassinated Michael Stelescu, leader of the Rumanian non-anti-Semitic Fascist League.
Forcing their way into the Bramcovenescu Hospital, where Stelescu was recovering from an operation, they riddled him with 28 bullets. Then they surrendered to the police.
No one dared to interfere with the Iron Guardists, who held members of the hospital staff and police at the points of guns while they slew the Fascist leader.
Stelescu had been a prominent Iron Guardist, but quit the party three years ago because he did not agree with its terrorist methods. Recently he declared that although his party was nationalistic, he was no Jew-baiter, adding his supporters were animated by “genuine Christian principles.”
