Russian President Boris Yeltsin fired most of his top aides because they failed to stem crime or respond to several incidents of extremism, including anti- Semitic statements by a Communist member of Parliament, according to Yeltsin’s spokesman. The anti-Semitic statements by Gen. Albert Makashov have been a continuing source of controversy in Russia, as was the recent killing of a popular lawmaker, Galina Starovoitova, who had spoken out against Makashov.
