Russian Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov said he opposes banning the Communist Party despite its failure to officially censure a lawmaker who has publicly made several anti-Semitic statements recently. Some analysts speculate that Primakov’s stand was due to his desire to win broad support for next year’s budget, which is expected to arrive soon in the Duma, the Communist-dominated lower house of Parliament. Meanwhile, Patriarch Alexei II, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, criticized Gen. Albert Makashov, who continues to make anti-Semitic statements.
