Ilya Ries, porminent Russian Jewish regisseur, died here of a hemorrhage.
R#es was born in Rostov, Russia, and was descended from a long line of rabbinical scholars. He came to the Argentine about six years ago from Riga.
In Russia during the war years, Ries established a number of opera troupes and theatres where opera was given. Several road companies also went on tour under his direction.
In the Argentine Ries was a tragic figure. His attempts to become acclimated here were painful, for he did not know Yiddish and the life of the Jeish people was unfamiliar to him, although his family was Jewish. Despite these obstacles he succeeded in staging a number of plays here in Russian and in Yiddish. He also organized a theatrical study group, plays shortly before he died.
