The Palestine Electric Corporation, of which Pinchas Rutenberg is the head, has received a concession from the Transjordanian government to build street car lines at Amman, the capital of Transjordania. The concession also includes other Transjordanian towns, according to a report of the Arab paper “El Carmel”.
Sidney Hillman, President of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America announced plans whereby workers who are unable to finance the purchase of cooperative apartments in the buildings being erected in the Bronx by the union will receive assistance from the organization. The housing project consists of six units comprising 300 apartments now being erected on Mosholu Parkway near Van Cordlandt Park. They will cost $1,7500,000 and will be ready for occupancy in October.
Loans by the Amalgamated Bank and the Amalgamated Credit Union, said Mr. Hillman, will enable a union member to borrow three-fifths of the necessary amount from the union bank and the remainder from the credit union, another clothing workers’ association.
With $138,726 raised of the $300,000 needed to complete the necessary improvements for the United Israel Zion Hospital, Brooklyn. N. Y., Abraham J. Herrick, vice-president and chairman of the executive committee, at a meeting held in the Nurses’ Training School of the hospital, announced the appointment of the district chairmen who have volunteered to assist in the completion of the campaign.
Mrs. Estelle M. Sternberger, Executive Secretary of the National Council of Jewish Women, will broadcast a message on the subject of “Were Our Mothers Better Daughters?” from station WEAF on Tuesday. April 5th at 4:30 o’clock, at the invitation of the Women’s League of the United Synagogue of America.
