Former Foreign Minister Abba Eban has received approval in principle from Premier Menachem Begin and Foreign Minister Moshe Dayan to respond favorably to an invitation from President Anwar Sadat to visit Egypt, it was learned today. No date for the visit was suggested by Begin or Dayan and Eban is biding his time.

Eban is a Labor MK but holds no government office. Nevertheless, a visit to Egypt by him, which would presumably include a meeting with Sadat, would have political significance since Eban is coordinating his activities closely with the government. He has just agreed to a request from Dayan to participate in the government’s information program abroad.

Eban is one of several prominent Israelis who will go to the U.S. shortly to explain Israel’s political positions. Others enlisted in that task by the Foreign Ministry include Justice Minister Shmuel Tamir, Energy Minister Eliezer Modai, Supreme Court Justice Meir Shamgar, Meir Rosenne, legal counselor to the Foreign Ministry, and Eliahu Ben-Elissar, director general of the Prime Minister’s office.
