Sam A. Lewisohn of New York City has been appointed by Governor Roosevelt as chairman of the legislative committee which is to make an investigation of prison administration. Speaker McGinnies of the Assembly and Senator Knight, president pro tem of the state senate, agreed to the appointment of Mr. Lewisohn and the other six members of the commission which is to formulate a comprehensive plan of prison construction and report to the Legislature on Feb. 15 next.
Mr. Lewisohn, a son of the noted New York Jewish philanthropist, Adolph Lewisohn, is a member of his father’s firm and a director in many investment and mining companies. In 1928 he was appointed a member of the State Commission of Correction. He is a director of the Hebrew Sheltering Guardian Society, president of the American Association for Labor Legislation, a member of the executive council of the National Committee on Prisons and Prison Labor and the author of two books on industrial problems.
