Sir Herbert Samuel, principal speaker at a Chanukah celebration in Tel-Aviv, paid tribute to the enduring powers of the Jewish race, its contribution to the arts and to commerce, and hailed the Hebrew Renaissance in Palestine.
The High Commissioner apologized for his inability to deliver all of his address in Hebrew. He took this occasion to dispel the gloom in certain Jewish quarters over the modest progress of the Jewish effort in Palestine. Discounting the ill forebodings the High Commissioner said that Palestine had already inscribed upon its portals “Be strong in hope all ye who enter here”.
Sir Herbert denied the Jews in Palestine intended to cause a social upheaval, saying he had found the bulk of the Jews were living modestly enough, shunning extravagance while at the same time not permitting themselves to fall under the apathy and inactivity characteristic of certain sections of the East.
