Pinhas Sapir took part in several events on the day of his arrival here last week despite an attack of influenza, but was unable to attend the opening night of the ninth Argentine Jewish communities convention last Wednesday. The chairman of the Jewish Agency and World Zionist Organization Executives has since been in bed recovering from the illness. About 200 delegates were present for the opening of the convention, 100 from 40 communities outside of Buenos Aires and 100 from Buenos Aires where two-thirds of Argentine Jewry live.
Chaim Rajchenberg, president of the Buenos Aires kehilla, who opened the conclave, said the kehilla had been founded in 1894 by some 85 members and that today the community of 50,000 members head of families helps maintain Jewish schools for some 16,000 pupils, has widespread social work facilities and many cultural activities, among them an annual Jewish book fair which started five days ago. Speakers at the convention stressed the importance of Jewish education as a means of maintaining identity and strengthening national Jewish consciousness, particularly for Jewish youth who turned leftwards when they arrived at university age.
