Religious education in the form of readings from the Old and New Testaments will be introduced in the Saskatoon public school system next September, the local school board has decided.

The decision, which the board said would give the schoolchildren “an opportunity to come to know both the Old and New Testaments,” was opposed by the Jewish community and by local labor groups. It came about as a compromise on a proposal originally made five months ago by the Saskatoon Ministerial Association that school children be given a half-hour of religious “instruction” on one or more days each week in the elementary schools.
