Mayor J. Curtis Lewis, Jr., an active member of the local Baptist Church, has presented a tract of land to Congregation Agudath Achim for its planned new synagogue building. The mayor made the gift to honor an associate of the Mayor’s firm who has been a member of the firm for the past 50 years. Mayor Lewis has presented similar tracts to various other houses of worship and to the YMCA of Savannah.
Benjamin M. Garfunkel, president of Congregation B’nai B’rith Jacob of Savannah, a fourth-generation, fully observant Jew, has been elected an alderman of the city, receiving the highest total of votes among the elected aldermen. The aldermen therefore voted that Mr. Garfunkel is to serve as Mayor Pro Tem.
