The present German government of Chancellor Franz von Papen has taken the wind out of the sails of the anti-Semitic Hitlerite movement, declared Rabbi Dr. Felix Aber of Bremen, now here on a visit, in an interview with a representative of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
“It is rather a fortunate occurrence that at the time when the Nazi trend toward control of the German government was progressing rapidly, the von Papen government came into power, he said. Although it is not a Democratic government, it has so far not shown any signs of anti-Semitism,” Rabbi Dr. Aber stated: He expressed his belief that when normal economic and external political conditions return, the German people will be governed again by Democratic principles.
Dr. Aber, who supervises the regulations concerning ritual victualling for Jewish passengers on the steamers of the North German Lloyd, pointed out that the company’s steamers have had a kosher cuisine for those who require it for the past 25 years.
When the number of Jewish passengers travelling on the liners of the North German Lloyd, increased with the growth of Jewish immigration to America, an agreement was concluded in 1907 between the North German Lloyd and the “Hilfverein der deutschen Juden,” whereby special kosher cuisine was introduced on the North Atlantic liners of the company.
