The Synagogue Council of America has been granted formal recognition by the United States Selective Service System as an employer of conscientious objectors, with full authority for the placement of CO registrants in alternate service assignments, the Synagogue Council disclosed. The SCA is the national coordinating body of the rabbinic and lay branches of Conservative, Reform and Orthodox Judaism in the US.
According to the SCA, “This recognition formalizes a project initiated under the sponsorship of the SCA by which Jewish agencies such as community centers, congregations, Hillel foundations and child care organizations can employ Jewish COs who are required to perform two years of alternate service.”
COs in alternate service receive the same pay, privileges and opportunities as other employes in similar categories. Under the arrangements with the SCA, registrants may be assigned work in the New York area where most of the country’s Jewish population is located. Rabbi Isidor B. Hoffman is serving as project director.
