The prohibition of schechita, the method of killing animals for food prescribed by Jewish religious law, entered into force today in Germany. The prohibition applies to all ritual killing including poultry.
The Berlin Jewish community issued an appeal today to the Jewish population of Berlin to refrain from illegal schechita of poultry or buying from firms which can be considered violators of the anti-schechita law.
The law against schechita, which was announced some time ago, was passed because the Nazis claimed that schechita was a cruel method of killing animals.
