The resolution of the budget committee of the city council urging the introduction of Schechita prohibition in Poland’s capital was taken up at a plenary session of the council yesterday.
The resolution was, however, modified to apply only to animals slaughtered for the consumption of non-Jews, the aim being thus to oust Jewish meat dealers and workers from the non-Jewish trade.
During the discussion which developed, the Jewish councillors pointed to the fact that barbarous methods are still being practiced in the slaughter of swine and fowl which is being overlooked by the sponsors of the Schechita prohibition, who concentrate their attack on the Jewish method.
On the proposal of the councillors representing the Polish Socialist party, a committee of seven including one Jewish member was appointed to inquire into the matter. The Jewish councillors voted against the appointment of the committee, arguing that the move is calculated as an election stunt and as a means of ousting Jews from he trade.
