Rabbi Alexande M. Schindler, chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, was scheduled to meet here late this afternoon with the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, William Scranton. On Saturday night. Rabbi Schindler, and Yehuda Hellman, executive director of the Presidents Conference, will fly to Israel at the invitation of the Israeli government for four days of meetings with top Israeli leaders, the Presidents Conference announced today.
A spokesman for the Conference said the invitation was extended on March 19, two days after Schindler headed a Presidents Conference delegation which met for 85 minutes with President Ford at the White House. The spokesman said that Schindler and Hellman would discuss recent developments in U.S. foreign policy with their hosts in Israel and the present mood of U.S. public opinion and American policy-makers with regard to the Middle East. They will also seek to ascertain the Israeli position and will report back to the Presidents Conference on their return.
According to the spokesman, Schindler and Hellman have appointments with Premier Yitzhak Rabin and Foreign Minister Yigal Allon. They will meet with the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Security Committee and with various officials of the Israeli government and the Jewish Agency, with representatives of labor and management in Israel and with newspaper editors. They are also scheduled to have a meeting with U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Malcolm Toon.
