Foreign Minister Maurice Schumann told the cabinet today that the Middle East situation was “much brighter” with the acceptance of the United States peace initiative by Egypt. Jordan and Israel, a Ministry spokesman reported. It was further learned that M.Schumann described the chances for a Mideast peace as riper now than at any other time in the past 22 years, or since the establishment of the State of Israel. Ministry officials noted, however, that any settlement could be wrecked without a solution to the refugee problem, which, they said, “under no condition must be forgotten.”
