The arrest of refugees for internment was temporarily suspended here today on instructions from Scotland Yard. Manchester police also halted their round-up pending further instructions.
This action followed Home Secretary John Anderson’s statement in the House of Commons that police had been instructed not to arrest enemy aliens whose cases fall within the exemption categories and to postpone the internment of other cases of an exceptional nature.
Anderson also announced that civilian internees would no longer be sent overseas unless they volunteered for such a transfer or arrangements were made to send their families along.
