William Scranton, the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, said today that the “survival and security of Israel is absolutely essential” to the United States. Addressing the B’nai B’rith Middle Atlantic Region’s for convention here, Scranton also said that the U.S. was determined that Israel maintain its military superiority in the Middle East. But, he added, Israel should not depend only on the United States for guarantees of its security.
Discussing possible solutions to the Israeli-Arab conflict he said that he opposed partition of Jerusalem and that internationalization of the Holy City is “impossible.” He also ruled out U.S. recognition of the Palestine Liberation Organization until the PLO ends its terrorism and agrees to United Nations Security Council Resolutions 242 and 338 and recognition of Israel.
