West Germany’s governing Social Democratic Party gave its formal blessing to Chancellor Willy Brandt’s forthcoming visit to Israel. A statement issued by the party which is headed by Brandt, took note of the special relationship that exists between West Germany and Israel against “the background of the incomprehensible wrong done to the Jews in the name of the German people,” The statement noted that “The visit by Brandt to Israel will not close, by any mean, this dark chapter in the history of the two peoples. Many things will still have to be done before this is so. Brandt seems to be the right man to do it.”
