The second South American Zionist Conference, attended by delegates from seven countries on this continent, opened here last night with a large number of guests and delegates in attendance.
Eliahu Dobkin, Jewish Agency leader, addressing the opening session, called for unity within the Zionist movement and voiced the belief that Zionists “must exploit the pro-Israel feelings by organizing masses in the Zionist organization.” Mr. Dobkin also said that Chalutziut and Hebrew education are urgent tasks facing the Zionist movement today.
Israel Minister to Argentina Yaacov Tsur advocated a “partnership between Israel and the organized Jewish people.” Jose Lutzky, secretary of the United Israel Drive, warned the delegates that “without a strong Zionist movement, the United Israel Drive campaigns cannot be successful.” Mateo Goldstein, president of the Argentine Zionist Council, said the conference must “eliminate the overlapping of Zionist functions on this continent.
At a press conference before the meeting, Mr. Dobkin revealed that the forthcoming World Zionist Congress will be attended by 440 delegates, representing 1,875,000 persons who purchased Shekolim. Israel’s delegation will number 175, he reported, the United States and Canada will have 134 votes, Europe will have 45 and Latin America 36.
