Henry Cabot Lodge Jr., head of the American delegation to the United Nations, today indicated that Israel’s invoking of the Israel-Jordan armistice agreement provision to force a meeting with Jordan representatives (see pages 1 and 2) was of such importance that he would have to consult with Secretary of State Dulles on this move. Ambassador Lodge indicated this at a meeting late this afternoon with Israel Ambassador Abba S. Eban.
Mr. Eban also saw UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold for a second time late today and was informed that Mr. Hammarskjold would contact the Jordan Government on the requested meeting. On the time and place of the meeting, Mr. Eban stressed the urgency of the parley and said Israel had an open mind on the place.
