The value of Israel to mankind as “a great symbol of democracy,” was stressed here by Arthur J. Goldberg, the new Secretary of Labor in the Kennedy Administration. Mr. Goldberg, who addressed a dinner given in his honor by the Combined Jewish Appeal of Greater Chicago, declared:
“I have not changed my views, no matter what my job is to be, of the value of the work of the Combined Jewish Appeal here and overseas–and the values to mankind which lie in that great symbol of democracy, Israel, our friend and ally in that part of the world. “
More than 1, 500 leaders in the labor union movement, in Government circles and public affairs attended the dinner. Mr. Goldberg has long been active in the Combined Jewish Appeal here. A hand-illuminated copy of a resolution lauding Mr. Goldberg as “a champion of human rights and a man whose whole life is devoted to democratic ideals for people everywhere, ” was presented to the incoming Labor Secretary at the dinner.
