Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger–before he was appointed Secretary–contributed to a Jewish National Fund grove of trees in the name of the late Kurt Fleischman, a childhood friend in Fuerth, Bavaria. The grove will be planted in the Taoz forest. Many of the former members of the Fuerth community, now scattered throughout the world, contributed towards this project. Kissinger’s contribution was sent to the JNF through the organizing committee of the former Fuerth community in Switzerland.
Fleischman succeeded in reaching England after Hitler came to power in Germany. He changed his name to Kenneth Frazer, enlisted in the British army, was seriously wounded in the battle of Arnheim, taken prisoner by the Germans, and returned to Britain after the war. Because of his serious injuries he was never able to realize his life-long ambition of immigrating to Israel. He died in 1972 at the age of 53.
