Strong efforts are being made to secure the release of Prof. Enrico Volterra, Italian Jewish engineer, from the Isle of Man internment camp, it was learned today.
Volterra is the son of the late Senator Vito Volterra, outstanding Italian mathematician who died in Italy in October. Enrico Volterra was exiled from Italy in 1939 for anti-Fascist views and came to England where he was interned last June.
It was learned that Volterra had declined an invitation to fill the chair of engineering of the Institute for Testing Materials at Rosario University, Argentina, to come to England. The University recently renewed the offer but Volterra has not yet accepted, declaring in a letter that he would prefer to remain in England and place his knowledge at the service of this country’s war effort. He said, however, that if his services were not desired he would accept the invitation.
Volterra was at one time professor of engineering at the University of Rome. He did special research at King’s College, Cambridge, before his internment.
