Sen. Birch Bayh (D., Ind.) warned today that the U.S. must proceed with “extreme caution” in Four Power consultations on the Mideast because “the extremists’ policy of provocation in that area may very well be designed to create a false climate in which peace at any price appears as the only alternative to another war.” Sen. Bayh told the 61st annual dinner of Bnai Zion, American Zionist fraternal order, that renewed warfare would be deterred by “a strong Israel, equipped with Skyhawks (jet planes), hawk missiles and, most important, F4 Phantom jets.” The order’s America-Israel Gold Medals was presented to former Rep. Herbert Tenzer for his efforts to further American-Israel friendship.
