Senator Daniel B. Brewster, Maryland Democrat, a member of the Armed Services Committee, said today the United States should extend de facto recognition to Israel’s unification of the Old City of Jerusalem with the New City.
In a statement prior to his departure for home after a visit to Israel, Sen. Brewster also said that the United States must exert every possible influence — economic and military — to induce the Arab states to agree to peace talks with Israel. He added, however, that America should not give its hand to “unrealistic solutions.”
In an interview published in the afternoon daily Maariv, the Maryland Senator also called on the American Government to supply Israel with arms and warned Israel to stand firm and not withdraw from the occupied areas unless peace is established.
