Sen. Howard Metzenbaum (D. Ohio) and Senate Minority leader Robert Dole (R. Kas.) are urging Secretary of State George Shultz to reconsider his desire to sell F-15 jets to Saudi Arabia.
In the letter to Shultz, the Senators say, “we have no desire to see a divisive and rancorous fight on the floor and we want you to understand how broad and deep is the concern in the Senate.”
The Reagan Administration announced last week that it is postponing the sale of the 60 F-15s to Saudi Arabia until later this summer. The delay came in the aftermath of refusal of two Saudi F-15s to force down the Iiaqi jet that attacked the U.S. missile frigate Stark in the Persian Gulf.
