Sen. Hubert Humphrey this week-end called on Secretary of State Dean Acheson to reconsider the policy of the State Department’s Visa Division requiring aliens to state their race and ethnic classification in applying for visas.
In a letter calling for Sec. Acheson’s personal intervention, Senator Humphrey charged that the Visa Division’s requirement has “potentialities for anti-Semitic discrimination.”
Information regarding race and ethic classification on entry permits to the U.S. is required under terms of the McCarran-Walter Act, which will have no legal effect before December 24, but which the State Department has admitted following in this matter.
