The White House today received a request from Sen. Jacob K. Javits, New York Republican, asking the summoning of a White House conference to discuss the bombing of religious institutions and schools.
In a communication to the White House, Sen. Javits urged the President to call a conference “at the earliest practicable date through which the moral leadership of our country can best be mobilized.” The Senator told the President that bombings were directed against Americans “who are Negroes or of the Jewish faith as well as other Americans seeking the enjoyment of constitutional rights for their fellow citizens.”
In Little Rock, Arkansas Governor, Orval E. Faubus today promised retaliation against anyone who bombed Arkansas schools or religious institutions in the heat of racial or religious prejudice. The Governor’s statement followed anti-Semitic hoax threats to bomb Little Rock’s two synagogues.
Gov. Faubus said “I pledge to all the people of this state to exercise all my power and influence to protect and guard the life, limb and property of all individuals and groups, to which all are entitled under our democratic system of government.”
