Sen. Richard L. Neuberger, Oregon Democrat, espoused this week-end a Roman Catholic stand favoring a humane slaughter bill which is vigorously opposed by Orthodox Jewish groups.
Rabbis representing the Orthodox organizations recently testified against the proposed legislation before the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry. They held that its adoption would endanger shechita, the Jewish ritual method of slaughter.
Sen. Neuberger, a co-sponsor of the bill, read into the record a statement of the National Council of Catholic Women which he termed “a most persuasive and effective statement. ” The statement cited a 1950 expression of Pope Pius XII advocating greater mercy in the killing of animals.
