Republican Senator Hugh Scott, of Pennsylvania, told a Rice University audience here tonight that Jewish Telegraphic Agency chief Washington correspondent Milton Friedman was barred from a State Department briefing “because the Near East Desk at the State Department did not like the way he reports the news.”
The Senator, who first raised the issue in a Senate floor speech last week, described Mr. Friedman and the JTA in his speech tonight as a “fine American reporter with an American news agency.” His remarks came during an address on the overall handling of news in Washington by the Kennedy Administration.
