The nomination of Morris de Castro to be Governor of the Virgin Islands was approved today by the Senate Interior and Insular Affairs Committee. Mr. de Castro, who is Jewish, served as Acting Governor of the Virgin Islands for a short period in 1936 and for five months in 1939.
A native of Panama, Mr. deCastro has lived in the Virgin Islands since he was four years old. He has held various government positions, including that of Commissioner of Finance and confidential secretary to the Naval governors of the Islands. Mr. de Castro has also served as president of the Virgin Islands synagogue, Congregation Blessings and Peace.
