Senate to praise Palestinians
The U.S. Senate is likely to pass a resolution next week commending the Palestinians for holding free and fair presidential elections. The resolution, sponsored by the Senate majority and minority leaders, also describes the new Palestinian Authority president, Mahmoud Abbas, as a “credible leader,” calls for increased aid to the Palestinians and calls on Israel and the Palestinians to abide by the provisions of the “road map” peace plan, which requires the Palestinians to stop terrorism and Israel to limit settlement building. The resolution has been circulating since Wednesday and likely will pass Monday. A similar resolution is circulating in the U.S. House of Representatives.
