Senator Mike Mansfield (D. Mont,,) the Senate Majority Leader, tonight emphasized that understanding among Americans of all religions is “essential to a free and strong America.” He spoke at a dinner in the Waldorf-Astoria at which tribute was paid by the Interfaith Movement to Senator Kenneth B. Keating (R. -N. Y.) The dinner marked the 25th anniversary of the Interfaith Movement–a national organization dedicated to fostering brotherhood among people of all faiths and races.

Sidney Z. Searles, Interfaith president, said Senator Keating received Interfaith’s Silver Jubilee Award “in recognition of his long years of service in the Congress in the cause of fostering better understanding among peoples of all faiths creeds, races, and beliefs.” He told the guests that Senator Keating sponsored a senatorial resolution calling for national recognition of Interfaith Day, held annually on the fourth Sunday in September.

Senator Keating was presented at the dinner with a bust of his likeness created by Rene Shapshak, noted sculptor. Special awards on behalf of the three main religious faiths were also presented by Rev. Dan A. Potter, executive director of the Protestant Council of the City of New York; Right Rev. Msgr. John P. Haverty, superintendent of schools for the Archdiocese of New York; and Rabbi Israel Mowshowitz, president of the New York Board of Rabbis. Harry Rabinowitz, Grand Master of the Free Sons of Israel, presented the Senator with a check for $1,000–the first contribution to a $10,000 fund to be raised for the newly established Senator Keating Scholarship Program.
