A bill to admit Middle East refugees as well as refugees from Iron Curtain countries was introduced today by New York Republican Senators Jacob Javits and Irving Ives. The proposed legislation is aimed particularly at offering haven to Egyptian Jewish refugees.
In explanation, Sen. Javits told the Senate that his bill would enlarge upon the Administration’s proposal to admit Iron Curtain refugees to include up to 10,000 Middle East refugees. Referring to the Jewish refugees expelled from Egypt, he said: “Certainly, these unfortunate men and women are no less refugees and no less deserving of sympathetic assistance from the government and people of the United States than those who were able to escape the terror in Hungary.”
