Six Senators called on President Kennedy yesterday to take a stronger and more definitive stand in support of Israel’s security and Near Eastern peace in view of German participation in the Egyptian armament program.
The Senators were Hugh Scott, Pennsylvania Republican; Thomas H. Kuchel, California Republican; Winston L. Prouty, Vermont Republican; Jacob K. Javits and Kenneth B. Keating, New York Republicans; and Thomas J. Dodd, Connecticut Democrat.
President Kennedy was told in a joint letter from the Senators that recent developments made it “highly appropriate for the United States to reaffirm its deep and continuing interest in the security of Israel” and “to put renewed emphasis on measures designed to reduce Middle Eastern tensions.” They stressed that “it does not serve the interests of either the United States or of world peace” to have the German-Egyptian missile development continue.
