The serious shortage of rabbis in the American Jewish community was deplored here today by Rabbi Pesach Z. Levovitz, the newly-elected president of the Rabbinical Council of America.

Addressing the annual convention of the Orthodox rabbinical group, Rabbi Levovitz said that the lack of spiritual leaders may jeopardize the entire religious structure of the American Jewish community. If the trend continues, he told the 600 delegates, the lack of rabbis “will deprive the community of leaders to tackle the acute problems which constantly call for solution, explanation, guidance and direction.”

At an earlier session, Rabbi Israel Miller, the outgoing president of the organization, announced the establishment by the Rabbinical Council of America of a $3,000,000 research center in Israel for American rabbis. The new facility, to be known as the Rabbinical Council Center, will comprise an advanced institute for research with facilities for 100 young American rabbis who will spend a year at the institute immediately following their ordination.
