The Free City of Memel, under Lithuanian administration, was greatly agitated because of a ritual murder accusation sponsored by the local district attorney, Tostendte.
On April 6 a Christian servant girl employed by the Jewish merchant Schochar was found dead in a gas filled room. Although a physician established that the girl died as a result of inhaling gas, the local anti-Semites started a ritual murder agitation, accusing Schochar of having killed the girl for Passover. Schochar was arrested and his entire family was subjected to a severe cross-examination. Even his seven-year old daughter was questioned as to whether the servant was killed for Passover. Schochar is still under arrest.
